VERNON - Halloween is the only time of year when people actually pay to be scared. The North Okanagan is full of spooky events, some geared towards little ghosts and others strictly for older monsters.

If getting your pants scared off isn't the goal, there are other family-friendly, fall themed events.

The Historic O'Keefe Ranch is hosting the Field of Screams: Reel Fair. The event has two mazes that feature horror cinema and pay homage to horror flicks like The Ring, Nightmare on Elm Street, Texas Chainsaw Massacre and more. Doors are open from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. The ranch is located at 9380 Hwy 97N. The field of screams is open until Oct. 29. The cost is $10 per maze and is not suitable for children under 8.

For something more family friendly, Family Daze at the The Historic O'Keefe Ranch corn maze will run on Saturday, Oct. 29 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The ranch is offering pony rides, tractor rides, food vendors, two corn mazes, a bonfire, a pumpkin kids schoolhouse and a cowboy skeleton. Family passes are available for $30 or $10 per adult.

The Caravan Farm Theatre is holding their 13th Walk of Terror on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. Gates creak open at 6:30 p.m. and the walk begins at 7 p.m. The walk ends and music by Chipko Jones takes over at 8 p.m. At this party, you'll find a bonfire, hot chocolate, halloween treats, and prizes for best costume. Tickets are $24 at the door or $19 for adults and $6 for children in advance from ticketseller.ca. The Caravan Farm Theatre is located at 4886 Salmon River Road in Armstrong.

If jamming out to tunes is how you like to get down on All Hallows Eve, the Halloween party tonight, Oct. 28, at the Kal Sports Bar is the place to be. Dragstrip Devils, Frig Off, Tidal Baby are all scheduled to rock their spooky socks off. The music starts at 9 p.m. with a $10 cover charge.

More family-friendly Halloween fun can be found at the Vernon Museum and Archives Halloween Magic show. Magician Leif David will be performing sleight of hand on Saturday Oct. 29 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Clean comedy and plenty of audience participation is planned for this show. Afterwards, the old town shops are open for the kiddies to trick or treat inside the museum. Tickets are $5 in person at the museum prior to the show. Seating and tickets are limited. The museum is located at 3009 32 Ave.

The Allan Brooks Nature Centre is hosting the October's Best Fest by donation. Activities like pumpkin carving, archery, kite building and flying, craft workshops, games and a bonfire with s'mores, hot cider, and a costume contest will all be available. After dark, staff will light up pumpkins walk with stories on the nature trail. This event takes place on Saturday, Oct. 29 from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m at 250 Allan Brooks Way.

The Downtown Vernon Holiday Treat Trail is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 31 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Downtown businesses are handing out candy and treats to kids under 12-years-old who are trick or treating.

After dusk on Halloween, fireworks will be soaring and lighting up the skies all over the North Okanagan, with Lumby, Cherryville, Lavington, Westshore, BX, Kal Beach, Armstrong Spallumcheen all participating.
