Alleged thief fails again, and again, and then it gets worse

VERNON - First, an alleged thief failed to steal the goods and then it went downhill from there.

Vernon RCMP brought in the dog unit to investigate a report of a theft of a trailer in progress at Silver Star Mountain Resort, Thursday, February 12.

Mounties were called to parking lot "E" at 6:30 p.m., according to an RCMP media release, and were told the suspect vehicle was a white Ford pickup truck with a broken rear tail light.

The suspects managed to leave the scene before officers arrived, although they didn't manage to hook-up and steal the trailer despite multiple attempts, police say. The white F-350 with an Alberta plate was eventually located down an embankment in the 7800-block of Silver Star Road. Nobody was inside, but the police service dog was able to track a scent.

Officers followed the track, locating one of the suspects.

"When the police dog approached the suspect, the man started hitting our police dog," RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk says. "Our dog handler had to immediately intervene to prevent injury to the police dog. The suspect was finally subdued and handcuffed. Fortunately our dog was not hurt."

The 46-year-old Alberta man was bitten by the dog, Molendyk says, and has a small laceration to his head. He was checked at hospital and returned to the RCMP detachment after minor treatment.
