B.C. firefighters heading to Alberta

KAMLOOPS - Fire risk in B.C. has lowered over the last several days and as a result B.C. Wildfire is sending crews to Alberta, where the province is under a province-wide fire ban as several large wildfires burn out of control.

The Wildfire Management Branch said today, May 27, it would be sending 80 sustained action firefighters, eight support personnel and two fixed-wing aircraft to aid in fire suppression efforts in Alberta.

Rainfall and cooler temperatures in many parts of B.C. have resulted in a significantly lower fire danger rating, currently very low to low in most of the Kamloops Fire Centre, but sufficient resources will remain in B.C. to properly respond to any fire activity.

Crews remain on scene of the 25,000-hectare Little Bobtail Lake fire southwest of Prince George. That fire is the largest so far this year and is now 100 per cent contained.

Under national agreement, crews can be deployed out of province for up to 19 days, but can be recalled at any time if needed.

Last year, more than 1,275 additional resources from all 10 provinces, the Yukon, Alaska and Australia were brought in to help fight wildfires in B.C.
