A BC teacher has been disciplined by the province's teacher regulator for showing students in Grades 2 and 3 an animated YouTube video that involves suicide.

The short film, called “Life is Beautiful" shows scenes of sexual intercourse as well as suicide, according to the B.C. Commissioner for Teacher Regulation in a recently released decision.

Amira Mounir Abraham was given a formal reprimand and was ordered to take a remedial education course after admitting to showing her students the age-inappropriate movie. She said she had to mark and grade assignments and opted to show the film during snack time. She hadn't seen the nine-minute movie before and had an opportunity to stop it, but didn't, the commissioner said.

"On two occasions, Abraham became aware that the film was not age-appropriate," the decision said. "However, she did not intervene or stop the film. Instead, she continued grading."

YouTube has a suicidal content warning on the film, shown below.

Abraham has to complete a course on “Creating a Positive Learning Environment” and seek guidance in the future to avoid another such event.

Abraham had previously reprimanded by her employer for “fail(ing) to adequately supervise a kindergarten/Grade 1 class” in 2019.

The BC Commissioner for Teacher Regulation considered Abraham’s previous reprimand and the students were of “particular(ly) vulnerable age” in the decision.

Abraham will have until Mar. 31, 2024, to submit a proof of course completion to the Commissioner at risk of seeing her teaching license suspended.

Abraham agreed to the consent resolution agreement and to take the mandated course.
