Bus driver assaulted in downtown Kelowna

KELOWNA – A bus driver taking a break while on shift was assaulted in downtown Kelowna Friday night.

Bill Harding, the manager of Kelowna Transit, says the driver was walking away from his bus at the Queensway exchange around 8 p.m., Jan. 8, when he felt a slight push on his back.

“Somebody snuck up behind him when he wasn’t looking and whacked him in the head,” Harding says. “He didn’t see him coming.”

With his head turned slightly to one side, the punch landed on his temple and he suffered a concussion.

Const. Jesse O’Donaghey says the driver followed his attacker until he lost sight of him at Doyle Avenue and Abbott Street.

Harding says the driver was not seriously injured and he was back at work on Monday. He says the driver doesn’t remember seeing his attacker on the bus and believes it to be a random attack.

The suspect is described as approximately 30-years-old, wearing a grey and blue snow jacket and carrying a backpack.

Several security cameras monitor the Queensway bus loop but RCMP have not said if they caught the assault on any of them.

The investigation is ongoing.

Anyone who witnessed the attack is asked to contact Kelowna RCMP at 250-762-3300 and ask for Const. Sheldon Herman. Remain anonymous by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477, leaving a tip online at www.crimestoppers.net or by texting your tip to CRIMES (274637) ktown.
