It’s time to get recyclable beverage containers of one litre or more back for a refund.
Changes are coming to B.C.’s Return-It refundable beverage container stewardship program on Oct. 1.
The current refund of 20 cents for plastic, glass and gable top containers over one litre in size will drop to a new, unified 10 cent deposit.
The change complements an increase from 5 cents to 10 cents for containers one litre and under, which was made in November 2019.

Consumers will have a transition period from Oct. 1 to Oct. 11 to return larger beverage containers purchased before the deposit change to get a 20 cent refund, according to the industry-owned stewardship organization. After that date, the 10 cent refund will apply.
The 10 cent unified deposit was part of a number of innovations announced in July, aimed at enhancing the Return-It recycling system and make it easier to recycle refundable beverage containers.
