KAMLOOPS — Two citizens will be recognized for their significant contribution to Kamloops next month.

Mayor and council will present longtime broadcaster Doug Collins and former city councillor Patricia Wallace with the Freedom of the City Award on April 10, according to a City of Kamloops media release.

The Freedom of the City is awarded infrequently and only with the unanimous support of mayor and council. Since 1949, 25 individuals and six entities have been given the award.

The award is also symbolically known as the “Key to the City” and provides recipients with certain privileges such as free parking and special invitations to all civic functions, the City says.

Doug Collins has been with CFJC-TV in Kamloops for nearly 50 years and became a news director in 1971. Although he recently retired from full-time management duties, he still spends his days at the station.

Patricia Wallace served as a Kamloops city councillor for 31 years before retiring in 2018. She also served on the executive of the Union of B.C. Municipalities for eight years and served as the president in her last year. She served as the first and only female board chair of the Thompson-Nicola  Regional District from 1983 to 1986.

Legendary longtime broadcaster Doug Collins is one of two recipients of the 2019 Freedom of the City Award.
