SALMON ARM - Conservation officers are investigating after a moose was illegally shot in Salmon Arm.

Conservation officer Mike Richardson says the service received a report of a shot cow moose yesterday, Jan. 19, found on private property adjacent to Crown land.

“There is no season on moose right now,” Richardson says.

Conservation officers seized the moose, as well as firearms and other items used in the commission of the offence. Richardson says the firearms were seized from a pair of suspects who are now being interviewed, but declined to comment further.

“We’ve got some information we’re looking into, the investigation is ongoing,” Richardson says.

If charged under the Wildlife Act, perpetrators can be fined, have their hunting license suspended, or face other penalties from the courts.

No meat was taken from the moose, and Richardson says it will be donated to a First Nation or a local charity for food.

“We’re not 100 per cent sure why it was shot,” Richardson says. “People usually do it for the meat.”

Richardson says a few poaching offences are investigated in the area every year, but are not overly common.
