VERNON - This year's Canada Day celebrations in Vernon are back with a boom this July 1, promising fun activities for the whole family.
The action takes place in Polson Park starting at 10 a.m. and wrapping up at 4 p.m. The fun then continues to Kin Beach for the fireworks display at 10:30 p.m.
"It's a great event all around... come and enjoy the food and entertainment," North Okanagan Canada Day president David Frost told iNFOnews.ca. "It's a great way to celebrate Canada's birthday."
Frost said around 10,000 to 12,000 people normally head to Polson Park for the celebrations each year.
The main stage will hold wide an array of music from 10 a.m. including everything from the Kalamalka Highland Pipe Band and alternative punk band Knu Punk, to Vic 'the one-man dance band' who somehow manages to play a selection of instruments all at the same time.
The opening ceremonies take place on the stage at 12 p.m. and include the singing of the national anthem.
Extreme motocross riders will be jumping over a cube van during their 11 a.m. demonstration, and back after a one-year hiatus, O'Keefe Ranch will be giving horse-drawn stagecoach rides around the park.
The year's kid zone is bigger than ever, featuring a wide choice of activities to keep them occupied, from live games and a hulu hoop contest to face painting, lots of crafts, fun with bubbles and more.
Dogopogo dog agility will show what their pooches can do at 10:30 a.m. and there will be a special skateboard competition running from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. The Vernon Winter Carnival crew will also be setting up a broomball court.
If all that sounds like it will make you hungry they'll be 10 food trucks cooking up a wide variety of food and a food court area offering shade (or rain cover).
Once the day wraps up they'll be time to head home before venturing out to the fireworks at Kin Beach.
Blasting off from a platform 250 metres from the beach in Okanagan Lake, as well as Kin Beach, the fireworks will also be able to be seen from Paddlewheel Park, Bench Row Road and other public beaches dotted along the lake.
The Rise Golf Course is also allowing spectators to view the firework from their patio. Tickets are free of charge but need to be booked in advance here.
