Home of the future lands at Aberdeen mall

KAMLOOPS - A modular home outfitted with the newest technology and gadgets is set up to give Kamloops residents a glimpse into a home of the future.

The modular structure is currently parked outside the main entrance at Aberdeen Mall and boasts several gadgets which all run smoothly on the hair-thin flexible glass wires — fibre optics — set to come to Kamloops soon.

Clare Adams, a senior regional marketing manager with Telus, notes the home, which is being showcased around the province, is mostly conceptual to show visitors how well the system can withstand all the active devices and sync up between family members.

A facial identification screen greets you at the front door of the home and on the other side of the door homeowners are faced with another screen which allows you to see any missed messages and notify other housemates of your return.

Other features include a stove which instructs users on cooking directions and item lists, a tablet-style countertop which scans grocery receipts and turns items into recipes available on a screen built into a cabinet door and a moving picture wall which can change colours and design.

The future home will be in the Aberdeen Mall parking lot from today, Nov. 24, through Monday, Nov. 29. Walk-throughs are available between 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.
