How unusual was the dump of snow in Kamloops yesterday?

View from the back of the Kamloops Law Courts on Nov. 2, 2017.

KAMLOOPS - If snow keeps falling in the Interior the way it did yesterday, it could be the snowiest November Kamloops has had in the past few years.

The city received 6.8 centimetres of snow at lower elevations on Nov. 2, after an arctic front made its way across the province, triggering a special weather statement from Environment Canada.

Environment Canada meteorologist Lisa West says due to wind gusts and more snow at higher elevations, the city likely received more snow than that in different areas. Snowfall amounts are recorded at the Kamloops Airport, located in a flat part of the city.

Highway 5 near Walloper Lake recorded 21 cm of snow, while the weather station near Barnhartvale recorded 20 to 30 cm, West says.

Past snowfall amounts recorded at those weather stations are not available through Environment Canada, but records from the Kamloops Airport station show the last time there was this much snow in November was in 2015.

That year, 8.2 cm of snow was recorded for the month of November, but snow didn't fall in the city until Nov. 15. West says with a La Niña winter forecasted for the region, this year's November snowfall could surpass that.

"As you can see 6.8 cm out of 8.2 cm is three quarters of the way there," West says. "It's highly favourable to break that record by the time we get to end of month."

Last November, it didn't snow at all in Kamloops, and in 2014 it didn't snow until Nov. 20.

But West warns that although a cooler than usual winter is predicted, there are a lot of variables that can play into weather conditions, and nothing is set in stone.

She says no significant snow is in the short-term forecast for Kamloops, and temperatures are expected to get back up above freezing by early next week.

Environment Canada snowfall records are available until 2013 online here.
