If you plan to get behind the wheel of a vehicle after a few drinks or tokes this summer, be advised police throughout the Southern BC Interior will be watching for you.
Counter Attack campaigns used to be most prevalent during the Christmas and News Year’s Eve period, but statistics collected by ICBC show impaired driving-related crashes, where someone is injured or killed, are on the rise in the summer months.
The Southern Interior saw a whopping 53% increase, the second worst region in BC, according to an ICBC media release issued today, June 13.
Northern BC had an increase 63%, Vancouver Island 21% and the Lower Mainland came in at 11%.

ICBC said, on average, 23 people are killed and 344 injured in impaired driving crashes in the Southern Interior every year.
Police officers will be out looking for impaired drivers at Counter Attack road checks starting this weekend. The roadside stops will continue all summer.
“Driving under the influence is a serious and reckless decision that endangers not only the driver but everyone on the road,” BC Association of Chiefs of Police president deputy chief Fiona Wilson said in the release.
“It's imperative that we all understand the life-altering consequences that can arise from this irresponsible behaviour.”
