The summer solstice is the longest day of the year, marking the first day of summer in the Northern Hemisphere, and this year it coincided with the appearance of the full moon.

Photographers across the Thompson-Okanagan region have been posting celebratory captures of the full moon, sunsets, sunrises and summer blooms.

The summer solstice happens when the sun is travelling on its most northern path in the sky and the North Pole is at its maximum tilt, according to the Old Farmers Almanac. This year the solstice was on June 20, but it doesn’t always occur on the same calendar day every year.

The term “solstice” comes from the Latin words sol (sun) and sistere (to stand still).
