After a steep hike down into the Tranquille Slot Canyon near Kamloops, hikers can navigate the wet canyon, which offers some small swimming spots and waterfalls.

KAMLOOPS - As summer wraps up, it’s time to check out one of the most intriguing hiking spots in Kamloops.
This is the perfect time to wade through Tranquille Slot Canyon as the water is low and warm. It’s a unique hike along the Tranquille River that is not easy to do but offers waterfalls, a fossil site and challenging terrain covering land and water.
About 35 minutes northwest of Kamloops, you can find the entrance to the area. After pulling into the loop-style trailhead and following flagging tape down a steep hike, you’ll find yourself at the entrance of the Tranquille Slot Canyons. The Tranquille River used to be a hot spot for gold panning, so keep your eye out for an extra sparkle in the water.

There are two canyons to explore, the north slot and south slot. The south slot can be very challenging, and Kamloops Trails recommends people don’t go alone, and suggests bringing hiking poles for the excursion. The river in the south slot can become challenging at the steep and narrow sections, and it is also recommended you bring shoes and a strong grip.
There are a few pools of water and a small waterfall. Kamloops Trails recommends hiking this canyon north to south, as climbing up the waterfall can be slippery and challenging.
The north slot is an easier route, with the water level at waist level in most parts. It takes about 15 minutes to cover this part of the canyon.

Kamloops Trails says at the east end of the south slot, you can see dozens of fossils, mostly leaves and ferns.
You don’t have to traverse the difficult south slot to see the fossils, as you can choose to hike over a hill to the area instead, according to an event itinerary by the Kamloops Hiking Club.
To get to the slot canyons, follow Tranquille Road in the direction of the Kamloops airport. Once you get to Red Lake Road/Tranquille Criss Creek Road, follow that for 9.3 kilometres. After passing the Red Plateau Forest Service Road, you are about two minutes from the pull off. A small loop parking lot is the entrance to this site.
