Kamloops grocery story turns unwanted anti-mask leaflet into fundraiser for COVID-19 relief

A Kamloops grocery store received an unwanted leaflet promoting an anti-mask group yesterday.

Alyssa Binnie said one of her coworkers was working the cash register at the grocery store when a middle-aged woman, who was wearing a mask, gave her the leaflet. Binnie was unable to disclose the name of the store due to a company legal policy.

“They were trying to be pretty inconspicuous about it, they’d already come in and done their shopping," she said. "They flipped it over so no one could see what it was, slipped it over to her and walked out.”

The staff didn't take the leaflet too seriously, making jokes about it before tossing it in the trash. However, Binnie wanted to alert other businesses, so she took a photo and posted it to a local Facebook group.

“A lot of businesses don’t know how to deal with this, and I want everyone to be aware that this is going around," she said.

The leaflet was made by the religious-based group Action4Canada and was addressed to B.C. business owners.

Following the new public health orders, Binnie said the worst behaviour her workplace has dealt with so far is grumpy customers who storm out when asked to mask up.

"Like all businesses, we have a few bad apples, but most of our customers are actually really good with it," she said.

Others haven't been so lucky, like the Penticton liquor store employee who was spat on, or the Walmart employee in Dawson Creek who was assaulted after asking customers to wear a mask.

Binnie decided that she would use her post about the anti-mask leaflet as an opportunity to do good. For every commenter in support of the pamphlet, she will donate $20 to the BCCDC Foundation for Public Health for their COVID-19 Emergency Response Fund.

"I’m actually making a list, and I keep checking the comments," she said. "It’s at $120, I’m keeping track."
