KAMLOOPS - The Centre for Seniors Information activity centre is hoping a few votes will help them get the funds they need to help create an inclusive performance program.

The Centre for Seniors Information has again entered the Aviva Community Fund competition, this time in an effort get backing for an ‘inclusive performance’ program. In collaboration with the local non-profit acting group Class Act Theatre Society, anyone interested in the theatre at the Brock community centre can participate.

Executive Assistant Brandi Allen says through fundraising and donations the centre has built a stage but they still need 'everything that can turn a stage into theatre,' including stage lighting, a sound system, control boards, microphones and theatre curtains.

“The whole point of the theatre is to promote inclusiveness. I think it’s extremely important to do these types of programs; not everybody fits into everything,” Allen says.

She says they want performances to be both inclusive and accessible. The performances held at the centre will be at an 'extremely low price point compared to other theatres.'

Allen says people can be part of the program through open auditions, behind the scenes duties or even setting up sets and seating.

“We’re the type of organization who aren’t only seniors,” she says, adding that anybody that wants to audition can.

The activity centre is attached to the seniors’ centre wants to be a community hub for all age groups. The centre says their performance program 'will be a great avenue for educational skits, fun plays, dinner theatres and celebrating multiculturalism.'

“It’s important to support things in your community,” Allen says, adding the program will have a direct impact on people in Kamloops. "It would be really cool if we could build something here for the community.”

From Oct. 6 to 23 people vote for the project of their choice and those with the most votes go on to become finalists. Winners are then selected by a panel of judges.

According to the competition website $1 million is available for the winning projects.
