March was colder and drier than normal in Southern Interior

March was colder and drier than normal in Kamloops and the Okanagan, in spite of a week of record breaking warmth between March 17 and March 23, 2019.

March was chilly and dry in the Thompson-Okanagan.

Environment Canada meteorologist Carmen Hart says March was drier than normal in Kamloops and the Okanagan, and the weather was also colder than normal.

“It’s going to be known as a cold month, but when you look at individual days, we had a really cold start to the month, then we had normal temperatures for a couple of days around March 16 and 17, and above normal temperatures since,” Hart says.

Hart says even though the month will be considered a cold one overall, it really started cold and had a warm finish.

During the week of March 17 to 23, 163 warm temperature records were shattered in B.C. Locally, only Kelowna had a new high temperature record set. That happened on March 20 when it reached 16.4 Celsius, breaking the old record of 16. 2 C set in 1988.

Kamloops, Vernon and Penticton all recorded top five high temperatures, but didn’t break any records.

Hart says no monthly records were broken.

March is ending with temperature a little above normal, as Environment Canada calls for a mild spring through April and May.

“Summer is looking warm at this point as well. There’s a lot of agreement between the various seasonal weather models on that,” Hart says.
