The Canadian military is expected to arrive in Kalamalka Provincial Park later today to deal with unexploded second world war era ordnance recently discovered by a hiker.

According to a Vernon North Okanagan RCMP media release, a hiker stumbled upon the unexploded ordnance in the provincial park while hiking Aug. 31.

RCMP say officers attended the area where the ordnance was found in the Cosens Bay area and have now notified the Canadian Forces Explosive Disposal unit.

The unexploded ordnance is not located by a public trail and has since been marked with police tape and is being guarded by a private firm.

"Even though it has been decades since this area was last used by the military, every year these devices are located by the public," Vernon RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Tania Finn said in the release. "It is important that users of park stay on established trails and alert police if a device is found."
