VERNON - Enderby will be on the big screen later this month when Tomorrowland, starring George Clooney, hits theatres.

The mystery-adventure film directed by Brad Bird is set to be released May 22. It follows the danger-filled mission of a jaded scientist, Clooney, and an optimistic teen, Britt Robertson, as they uncover the secrets of a place somewhere in time and space that exists in their collective memory — known as Tomorrowland. The film co-stars Hugh Laurie.

The film was shot in eight different B.C. cities, including Enderby, Armstrong, Richmond, Surrey, Burnaby, Delta, Langley, and Vancouver. Landmarks include UBC, the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre, the Museum of Vancouver and the Vancouver Academy of Music.

Disney Canada is tossing the province some love in its ad campaign for the movie, with outdoor ads featuring the phrase ‘Proudly filmed in Beautiful B.C.’ Ads will appear on map stands, busses, and transit shelters. Disney Canada marketing vice president Greg Mason said in a media release it’s not unique for a film to be shot in B.C., but noted this is the first time the province has been recognized in an ad for the important role it played in the production.

“We’re proud one of our biggest releases of the year was shot on Canadian soil and this was our way of conveying that pride and saluting the province and the members of the local film industry who were involved with the production,” Mason said.

Tomorrowland’s lead actors kept a low profile while filming in the area, but locals managed to have some fun with life-size Clooney cutouts set up around Enderby.

The film was hailed as a boon for the North Okanagan, with hotels, restaurants and other businesses feeling the positive economic impact.
