The Oliver Fire Department was sent to the scene of a grass fire Saturday morning that sparked when a bird hit telephone lines in the wrong way.

“It’s a very common thing, I mean it doesn’t happen a lot around here but it happens all over,” said Oliver deputy fire chief Byron Somerville.

When their wings hit the wires the wrong way, it can cook them, he said.

He said this is probably the second time an incident like this has occurred this year.

The grass fire was reported this morning at around 7 a.m. along Highway 97 north of the town.

“The fire was focused around a power pole, with reports from the caller of hearing an explosion shortly before the fire,” according to a post from the fire department.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze and FortisB.C. is on scene working to fix any power issues, according to the hall.
