Phishing scam complaints on the rise in Kamloops

KAMLOOPS - Fraudulent emails appear to be on the rise and Kamloops RCMP is warning these emails can look like they are coming from legitimate banks and businesses.

There has been an increase in the number of complaints about fraudulent emails requesting personal information, Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says in a release.

Shelkie warns these phishing scam replicate existing email and webpage formats to look legitimate and trick victims into submitting personal information, such as credit card or bank card numbers, social insurance numbers and passwords. This information is then used to commit fraud.

Some emails will say fraudulent activity has been detected on your account and it has been frozen until you supply personal information to verify it is you.

Shelkie recommends the following to help protect yourself:

  • Do not reply to any email that requests your personal information
  • Contact the business or financial institution immediately and report your suspicions
  • Do not click on any attachments; they can contain viruses and spyware
  • If you are unsure of the authenticity of an email, delete it
  • Contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Agency
