KELOWNA - Investigators looking into a fatal collision between a flatdeck truck and cyclist Friday afternoon are looking for witnesses.

Around 3 p.m., April 15, a westbound Sterling three-axle flatdeck commercial truck on Baron Road was turning right onto Banks Road when the crash happened, according to an RCMP release.

The cyclist, a 50-year-old Kelowna man, was also westbound on Baron Road and was passing traffic on the right, according to the release. The truck hit the cyclist and drove over him.

Police say the driver of the truck, a 48-year-old Kelowna man, remained at the scene and has been cooperative with the investigation.

“A Southeast District Collision Reconstructionist attended and conducted a detailed examination of the collision scene to determine the causal factors of this crash,” Const. Jesse O’Donaghey says in the release. “Preliminary findings by investigators are that the cyclist was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.”

The truck didn’t have any mechanical defects, he adds.

RCMP continue to assist the B.C. Coroners Service with the investigation.

If you witnessed this crash and have not yet spoken to police you are asked to contact Const. Lise Marion of the Kelowna RCMP Municipal Traffic Section at 250-980-5353.
