RCMP target crime in Vernon's downtown and other problem areas

Multiple officers from several RCMP units in Vernon spent six days focusing enforcement in the downtown and other problem crime areas of the city.

The six day operation saw officers execute 18 arrest warrants and initiate 97 investigations, according to an RCMP media release issued today, June 19. It took place on six separate days in the first half of June.

Using crime analyst data to identify high crime areas and priority criminals, officers targeted trespassing and loitering, open drug use and drug dealing. They also looking for people wanted on warrants or those with court ordered conditions.

Along with the arrests for things like obstructing a police officer and driving while prohibited, officers seized 13 weapons including Tasers, bear spray, carbon fibre “brass” knuckles and knives.

They seized more that 30 ounces of fentanyl, more than 10 ounces of methamphetamine, more that three ounces of cocaine, 300 prescription pills and $5,000 in cash.

“The initiative was partly funded through the Special Investigation and Targeted Enforcement (SITE) program and was a huge success with an immediate impact on community safety,” Vernon RCMP Sgt. Dave Evans with Targeted Policing Unit said in the release.

The investigations continue “with anticipation of criminal charges.”
