THOMPSON-OKANAGAN - If you were heading east today, expect delays west of Revelstoke and along several other Interior highways as crews perform avalanche control today.

Drive B.C. reports an 18-kilometre stretch of Highway 1 will be closed west of Revelstoke from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. today, Jan. 14, as crews perform avalanche control. Avalanche control will also be taking place on Highway 3 west of Creston from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. today and Highway 31 north of Beaton Armstrong from noon to 2 p.m. today.

The avalanche risk in the South and North Columbia ranges is currently rated as considerable at the treeline and alpine levels, according to Avalanche Canada, with the risk expected to lower to moderate over the next couple of days.

Avalanche forecasters note there have been ‘numerous’ storm slabs observed along the Trans-Canada Highway corridor and with up to 10 centimetres of snow recorded just Wednesday current storm snow totals range from 10 to 30 cm in the area.

Temperatures are supposed to remain near the freezing point today, except in the South Okanagan, where Environment Canada is calling for highs of 4 Celsius.
