Shotgun blast greets alleged victims of theft trying to get property back in Shuswap

CHASE - Chase RCMP were called to a home in Scotch Creek on the weekend after a report of shots fired.

At approximately 2:20 p.m. Sep. 7, officers were dispatched to a home on Hilliam Road in Scotch Creek, according to an RCMP media release.

After an investigation, police determined a group of individuals walked up to the residence in an attempt to retrieve stolen property.

"A loud noise resembling a gunshot was heard coming from within a residence and a male yelling at the group to leave the property," Chase RCMP Cpl. Scott Linklater said in the release. "A male was then seen exiting the house carrying a shotgun walking towards the group who had retreated to the roadway. The male then returned to the house."

Linklater said the man fled prior to officers arriving on the scene and no shotgun was found.

"Chase RCMP are always concerned when people decide to bypass law enforcement and take matters into their own hands. Not only is there a concern for their personal safety, but there is also a risk that investigations can be jeopardized and key evidence can be lost," Linklater said.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact the Chase RCMP at 250-679-3221 or anonymously by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
