KAMLOOPS - An afternoon wildfire that produced plenty of smoke and flames today could impact the city's air quality tomorrow.
B.C.'s Environment Ministry says in a news release that the smoke is currently decreasing and moving northwest, but if wind direction changes or winds drop, it's possible smoke will build up in the Kamloops airshed overnight or tomorrow, July 13. Environment Canada has now issued an air quality statement for the South Thompson, along with a wind advisory that's already in place for tomorrow.
Winds could pose problems for both the Shuswap Road fire and the smoke coming from it. The fire began around noon today, and ballooned to 380 hectares according to B.C. Wildfire's most recent update.
The ministry says in the release that people with pre-existing health conditions, elderly people, infants, children and sensitive adults are more likely to experience health effects from smoke exposure.
During smoky conditions, stop or reduce your activity level if breathing becomes difficult or you feel unwell, stay cool and drink plenty of fluids, carry any rescue medications with you and monitor your symptoms. Mild irritation and discomfort are common, the release states.
Kamloops's air quality health index rating is currently in the normal range, but you can go here for the most up to date numbers.
