Police have arrested a man for setting fire to the Osoyoos RCMP detachment in a bizarre and potentially very dangerous incident Thursday night.

Two officers were working in the detachment at the time, around 9:30 p.m. July 25. They smelled smoke and went out front to investigate and found the main entrance front wall of the detachment on fire. They also found a bystander trying to put it out with water from his RV.

"This situation could have been very dangerous for the members inside the detachment, luckily a good samaritan was nearby and acted very quickly to put out the fire," Cpl. Dave Smith, officer in charge of Osoyoos RCMP, said in a release.

While they were fighting the fire, a man arrived with more "flammable items presumably to add to the fire." Police recognized the man from several recent dealings and arrested him.

Joseph McArthur-Pereira, 28, is charged with arson and mischief causing danger to life. He made a court appearance Friday and returns in August.

Osoyoos Fire Department arrived and confirmed the fire was out and no one was in further danger.
