Three more small fires were started along Highway 97 in West Kelowna today.
Members of West Kelowna Fire Rescue were called to the area of Nancee Way shortly after noon today, July 24, according to a release from the fire department.
Three grass fires were located within a 200-metre span of each other. The largest was around 100 feet by 60 feet.
The fires were extinguished quickly. The cause has not been determined, but firefighters suspect they started because of sparks from a mechanical source.
“The fires started easily in the dried grass along the highway, and are a reminder of the current ‘high-to-extreme’ fire danger rating,” the release says.
The fire department responded with three engines, a pumper, a command unit and a safety officer. No injuries were reported.
Less than a week ago, on July 21, three other fires were extinguished along Highway 97 by West Kelowna Fire Rescue. They were burning near the 1900 block of the highway. Those fires were deemed suspicious as investigators found lit “smokers materials,” the fire department said at the time.
