KELOWNA – RCMP have arrested a suspect accused of stabbing a woman in the back in Rutland this week.

Derrick Kurtis Antoine, 29, was arrested for allegedly assaulting his 26-year-old ex-girlfriend at an apartment on Franklyn Road in Rutland just before 6 a.m. on Aug. 16. A witness close to the victim says the two were dating for several years but had broken up.

He says she described the weapon he stabbed her with as a "long, decorative knife."

“The knife had a curvy blade like one of those Super Save gas station knives,” he says. “(The stab wound) was on her left side below her shoulder blade. I was freaking out because it was on the same side as her heart and it looked deep.”

She was rushed to hospital where she received stitches to close the wound. Photos taken at the hospital show a bloody article of clothing with a hole in it.

Const. Jesse O'Donaghey says Antoine was arrested that night shortly after 10:15 p.m. when an officer saw the suspect in the area of Water Street and Queensway in downtown Kelowna. He was taken into police custody without incident.

In a prior media release police asked that anyone with any information contact the Kelowna RCMP at 250-762-3300. Remain anonymous by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477, leaving a tip online or by texting your tip to CRIMES (274637) ktown.
