Tenant rescued during early morning Vernon house fire

One person is in hospital after quick action from Vernon firefighters this morning.

Fire crews responded to a house fire at around 3:15 a.m. today, April 6, according to a City of Vernon media release. One person was already outside, but firefighters had to evacuate the other person from inside while crews doused the flames.

"Thanks to the quick actions of the crew, the tenant was rescued and the fire was contained to the single suite, which has smoke and fire damage," deputy fire chief Alan Hofsink said in the release.

Crews found smoke coming from the bedroom of a single suite when they got to the home on the 3900 block of 29 Avenue.

RCMP were also on scene, but the fire was later deemed to be accidental in nature.

“One person was taken to hospital by paramedics and Emergency Support Services was called in to assist the tenants with emergency shelter,” Hofsink said.

The response was delayed because responding firefighters were working with the wrong address.

“Unfortunately, an incorrect address was provided to dispatch when the call first came in this morning, which meant crews had to search for the location,” the deputy fire chief said. “It was a good reminder for residents and visitors to know the address of where they’re staying at all times, in case an emergency should happen and they need to call for help.”
