Parents can start planning to send their children to summer camp this summer, as COVID-19 measures are going to be reduced.

Overnight summer camps were able to operate last year in the province, but they were required to have COVID-19 safety plans as approved by local health authorities.

Public health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said those restrictions are set to be lifted as of tomorrow, March 11.

"That will be of particular interest to some parents and camp operators," Dr. Henry said at a press conference today.

Previous restrictions included requirements for social distancing, masks for both indoor spaces and outdoor where social distancing was not possible.

The lifted restrictions are part of several, as decided by B.C.'s public health officials, to be repealed in the province as COVID-19 case counts and hospitalizations continue on a downward trend.

In the summer of 2020, the province decided overnight summer camps simply could not operate in an effort to slow spread of COVID-19.

Along with repealed restrictions on summer camps, public health orders for masks, long-term care visitation and religious gathering limits are also being lifted at 12:01 a.m., March 11.

By April 8, proof of vaccination requirements are expected to be lifted for indoor facilities.

More than 80% of all B.C. residents have so far had at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.
