TNRD to test emergency alert system next week

Don't be surprised if a 'critical alert' starts ringing your phone next Friday.

With wildfire season quickly approaching, the Thompson-Nicola Regional District will be sending test emergency alerts through the Voyent Alert! app on April 23, according to a TNRD press release.

“Unlike the provincial system currently used for tsunamis and earthquakes, residents must subscribe first to receive these alerts. We encourage all TNRD residents to do so ahead of the 2021 flood and wildfire seasons,” TNRD emergency program coordinator Kevin Skrepnek says in the release.

The system will be used if there is an evacuation alert due to flooding or a wildfire, with information about the incident.

The regional district launched the system in June of last year, which has been used to advisory notices to community members about water systems so far.

There are nearly 2,000 active subscribers on the anonymous system so far, the regional district says.
