KEREMEOS - This past weekend a tractor trailer carrying hundreds of pigs to a slaughterhouse flipped on its side, killing some of the pigs.
RCMP were called to attend the single-vehicle collision west of Keremeos on Highway 3 at about 1 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 4, according to an RCMP media release.
Approximately 250 pigs were being transported from Tabor, Alberta to a slaughterhouse in Chilliwack. The truck driver, who was not injured, swerved after being cut off by another transport truck which had just passed him, losing control of the rig which ended up on its side with the trailer disconnected from the tractor unit.
RCMP say many of the pigs were ejected from the damaged trailer. Some were roaming along the highway, others had been injured, and many had been killed. Two officers and a nearby rancher herded the pigs into a nearby field.
Police had to euthanize three injured pigs.
"It's always a very unpleasant task for police to have to euthanize an animal, and in most cases we are dealing with a single animal," Cpl Dan Moskaluk says in the release. "In the cases with animal transport collisions involving hundreds of injured animals, it makes it especially hard for the officers."
The investigation into the cause of the collision is ongoing. Moskaluk says there is no description of the semi that cut-off the truck transporting the livestock.
