A troop of Ukrainian dancers is organizing a festival in Vernon to raise funds for humanitarian aid in Ukraine.

The Sadok Ukrainian Dance Ensemble is performing at the Okanagan Ukrainian Festival at the Vernon Performing Arts Centre at 2 p.m. on May 26, according to a press release from the troop.

Admission is by donation, and the group said the event is supposed to bring hope and be, “a gentle reminder to the audience that the war rages on in Ukraine and that donations are vital for humanitarian aid.”

There are going to be performances from the dancers and a Ukrainian choir based in North Okanagan.

The Sadok ensemble recently added two new dancers from Ukraine.

“For a girl who loves her native country, appreciates history and is proud of traditions, the opportunity to wear a traditional costume and dance Ukrainian folk dances is a breath of much needed air. I am looking forward to the concert in May. Thank you to Sadok for the opportunity to be myself even so far from home,” one of the new dancers Natalia Derevnianets said in the release.

“Dancing with Sadok is an enjoyable part of my life. Everybody is really energetic and ready to share their experiences,” the other new dancer Artem Fodorov said in the release.
