Washroom fire closes Kelowna middle school for the day

Students and staff at Rutland Middle School in Kelowna were evacuated after a fire in one of the washrooms over the lunch hour today.

Everyone evacuated safely, according to a school district media release. Firefighters and RCMP officers remain on the scene this afternoon to to investigate the source of the fire and clear smoke.

"I can't say enough about how well our school community responded to the emergency," principal Rod Baruta said in the release. "Everyone did their jobs as practiced, making sure everyone is safe, accounted for, and in good spirits as we gathered in the school field."

Operations staff are also helping to cleanup smoke and water damage. 

Students are due back in class Monday morning.
