West Kelowna city council voted overwhelmingly against the proposal for a massive resort hotel and condominium development in its Casa Loma neighbourhood today.
Blackmun Bay Developments had originally proposed 740 units with buildings reaching as high as 14 stories. By the time of the Oct. 23 public hearing, that was scaled down to a maximum of nine stories and 700 units. After the show of strong opposition from the public at that hearing, the developer dropped the height to eight stories and cut the number of units in half to 350.
That wasn’t good enough.
“I don’t feel that the applicant has effectively listened to our residents concerns,” Mayor Gord Milsom said at today’s, Nov. 12, council meeting.
Those concerns were primarily about the massive size of the project on Campbell Road, which is the only entrance to the Casa Loma neighbourhood on Okanagan Lake.
Milsom said a project of that size might be appropriate for the town center but not in the Casa Loma subdivision.
Only Coun. Jayson Zilkie voted in favour of the project.
