A young girl was violently assaulted in Kelowna near Gyro Beach on Friday, and police are working to identify all the attackers.

Kelowna RCMP received reports of several incidents where young people were committing assault, mischief, and other provincial statutory offences the evening of Sept. 27, according to a press release from police issued, Oct. 1.

Police said the incidents took place primarily in the 3000 block of Lakeshore Road.

One of those reports to police was a video of a violent attack on a young girl. The video has been circulating on the internet, but police are only releasing certain details to protect the investigation, the youth suspects, and any future court proceedings.

Police did not say how old the girl is or how many suspects there are.

RCMP launched an investigation as soon as the attack was reported and are combing through the video and other evidence to identify everyone involved including witnesses, parties to the offence and primary aggressors.

Mounties think there were several violent incidents over the weekend that haven’t been reported and are asking anyone who witnessed violence over the weekend to contact police at 250-762-3300 and reference file number 2024-57168.

“Police want to remind individuals that obtaining video evidence or forwarding it and posting it to the internet, when it is for the intended purpose of humiliation or degradation of someone else, is unacceptable. Any video capturing evidence of a criminal offence should be reported immediately to the police and not circulated publicly,” Sgt. Laura Pollock said in the release.

Sgt. Pollock urges the community to take action and report violence against youth.

“All acts of violence towards youth should be reported to police. Together as a community, we must double down our efforts to stop this criminality and deter violence against youth,” she said.
