Local woman's screenplay picked up by Lifetime's Movie of the Week

Vesta Giles will see her name on the small screen soon, after Lifetime picked up her screenplay for Movie of the Week.

KAMLOOPS - A Kamloops woman's idea is being brought to life on the small screen, after her screenplay was picked for Lifetime's Movie of the Week.

Vesta Giles has been working on her script for Justice Unleashed ever since she attended a writing workshop two years ago where a previous Movie of the Week winner talked about her experience.

She began writing her mother-daughter thriller and production company Odyssey Media bought Giles's script once Lifetime decided they wanted to show it.

"Odyssey has been great to work with on this," Giles says.

The premise for Justice Unleashed is about a woman who is a judge, and her daughter runs away, getting tied up with human traffickers. The film follows the mother's journey of trying to save her daughter and bring her home.

"Every writer has a bank of images that trigger a story," Giles says.

She came up with the idea when she saw a post online, showing a young man in New York during a cold spell, leaning next to a vent outside to try and get warm. His family found him while he was out there, and the idea blossomed after that.

Giles, part-time branch head at Logan Lake Library and part-time freelance writer, says every aspect of her life plays into the characters and storylines she comes up with.

"I think when you're around people all the time, you get different characters and different traits in your head," Giles says.

Shooting for Justice Unleashed started earlier this month, June 11, and went through to June 24 in Fort Langley. The film is expected to air at the end of the year or the beginning of next year.

But this isn't the only project Giles has on the go. A screenplay she wrote, which was originally rejected, has been accepted by Lifetime for another Movie of the Week. The filming for that movie is expected to begin at the end of the year.
